Activate hibernation in Windows 7
In Windows 7 you can activate the so-called hibernation. The contents of the RAM are written to the hard disk. The next time it is started, it will be loaded back into RAM and the system start will be shortened. However, please note that the system creates the hiberfil.sys file on your hard drive in order to be able to activate hibernation. This file is the same size as your RAM and can take up a few GB of hard disk space.
Here you will find the hibernation mode under Windows 7
- In Windows 7, hibernation was replaced by hybrid standby by default. This puts the computer in a very strong energy-saving mode, which still consumes electricity.
- Only a few OEM manufacturers have activated hibernation in their preinstalled Windows 7 versions. In this case, you can find hibernation by opening the start menu and clicking on the arrow next to "Shutdown".
- If hibernation is not in this menu, read below how to restore classic hibernation.
Disable hybrid standby in Windows 7
- Open the start menu by clicking on the Windows logo in the lower left corner or press the Windows key. Enter the keyword "energy options" in the search field and open the corresponding entry.
- In the following window, click in the middle on "Change energy saving settings" and then on "Change advanced energy settings".
- Select the "Allow hybrid standby mode" setting in the "Save energy" subitem and set it to "Off". Now the item "Hibernation" should be found in the start menu.
Activate hibernation using the command prompt
If the item "hibernation" still cannot be selected, you still have to activate it manually using the command prompt. To do this, enter "cmd" in the search bar in the start menu and select "cmd.exe". At the command prompt that opens, enter the following command: "powercfg -h on". With a click on Enter you confirm the command and after a restart you will find the entry "Hibernate" in the start menu.
