Rust: create a server - how it works
Almost every Early Alpha player has already come up with the idea of creating their own rust server. In this practical tip, we will tell you how or whether that already works.
Update: Everyone can create a Rust server
- Open the following Steam website and download the SteamCMD at point 2 below.
- Unzip the file, open it and wait for the loading process to be completed.
- Now enter the command "login anonymous" and confirm it with the [Enter] key.
- Now the command "force_install_dir C: \ Users \ Tim \ Desktop \ Rust \" follows. Here you have to replace "Tim" with your own Windows username.
- The "app_update 258550" command downloads all the files required for the Rust server. This may take a while.
- Open the folder created on the Dekstop and open the folder "rustserver".
- Right-click to create a new text document and insert the following text there: RustDedicated.exe -batchmode + server.hostname "TestServer" + server.maxplayer 7
- Under "File" click on "Save As", change the name to "Start.bat" and select "All files" as the file type.
- You can then open the "Start.bat" file in the folder. Wait a little and allow firewall request.
- The "find server" command shows you numerous options. Further explanations can be found on the Rustafied website.
- For example, if you are playing via Hamachi, you must first change the server IP. First, copy your own IP address.
- The command "server.ip 192.168.12.3" changes the IP address. Use your own IP here.
- Start Rust and press the [F1] key. Then the console starts.
- The command "client.connect localhost: 28015" starts a local server in the network. For example, play via Hamachi, use your own IP address instead of "localhost: 28015".
- The server then starts. All other players can join in-game console (F1).
- The command is "net.connect 192.168.12.3:28015". Again you have to use your own IP address or the command "localhost".
Beta phase: Create Rust server with key
If you are one of the few who have received a beta key from the developer, we will briefly explain to you what steps are required to set up your server:
- Install and start "SteamCMD" and log in with your Steam account or anonymously ("login anonymous").
- To start downloading the server files, type "app_update 258550 -beta stable -betapassword IHRBETAKEY validate" in the console. As soon as the download is complete, exit the input prompt with "exit".
- Windows: Start your server with "rust_server.exe -batchmode".
- Linux: "./rust_server -batchmode" works analogously on Linux distributions.
The instructions refer to an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS root server. In the next practical tip, we will show you the 5 best tips for a successful start so that you do not have to plunge into Rust's struggle to survive.
