The importance of SMART in hard drives
S elf monitoring, analysis and reporting technology, in English "system for self-monitoring, analysis and status reporting", is used for all modern storage media. It helps to extend the life of hard drives and prevent data loss.
- The SMART function predicts how likely it is that an HDD or SSD hard drive will fail. The basis for this is the overall picture, which a large number of sensors convey from the current state of the hard disk.
- To do this, your BIOS or UEFI periodically creates an overview of all parameters associated with a possible drive failure. If the temperature or acceleration time are not in the normal range, SMART records this in the error log.
- As a user, you normally do not notice this function in the background. With the help of certain software, however, you can read out the SMART log file in order to detect errors early. We have put together the best SMART hard drive tools for you.
