Reset Safari to default settings
In this guide, we explain how to reset your Safari browser to the default settings. If you accidentally make changes or nothing works anymore, you will get the old browser back.
This is how you can reset Safari to the default settings
Sometimes it is helpful to reset the browser completely. Please note that you should save your bookmarks beforehand. Instructions for Yoemite can be found in the next paragraph. How to reset the browser in previous versions of Mac OS.
- Click "Safari"> "Reset Safari" in the top menu bar.
- Uncheck if you want to keep a setting.
- Confirm with "Reset".
- Now you can import the bookmarks again.
- Note: This section applies to Mac OS X 10.9.5 on a MacBook Air with Safari version 7.1 or 8.0.3.
Reset Safari on Mac OS Yosemite
As of Mac OS X Yosemite, there is no setting to remove multiple options in one place. We'll explain how to reset Safari to the default settings step by step.
- Open the Settings by tapping Safari and choosing "Settings".
- Delete your data in the "Passwords" tab by clicking on "Remove all".
- Under "Privacy" reset the settings with the button "Remove all website data".
- Under "Notifications" you choose "Remove all".
- Outside of the settings you will find the option "Delete history and website data" in the menu item "History". Select "Entire History" and "Clear History".
