In this practical tip we explain how you can install and use Safari on your Ubuntu system. This is not only useful for Mac users, but especially web developers can use it to test their applications directly under Linux in the Mac browser.
Ubuntu: Install PlayOnLinux and Safari
In order to install Safari, you need the free program suite "PlayOnLinux":
- Therefore, open the PlayOnLinux website and click on "Ubuntu" and the link "PlayOnLinux_4.2.5.deb".
- Select the software center under "Open with" and click the "Install" button on the right.
- Before you install "PlayOnLinux", you should also set up the "wine" package. To do this, open a terminal window and enter the command "sudo apt-get install wine".
- Then open "PlayOnLinux" using the terminal command of the same name.
- In PlayOnLinux, click on "Install a program" in the left display.
- Enter "Safari" in the search field and click on the program found.
- Then select the "Install" option and follow the remaining installation instructions.
- Here you will find the option to download Safari and set it up directly.
