Use Samsung Galaxy as a remote control - how it works
The Samsung Galaxy S4 has an infrared interface built in, with which you can use the smartphone as a remote control. The little brother of the S4, the S4 Mini, also has this function. This practical tip shows you how you can use it.
Remote control with the Samsung App Watch On
The "Watch On" app is installed as standard on the Galaxy S4. With this app from Samsung, you not only have an overview of the TV program, but you can also set up the phone as a remote control. However, the function is not limited to televisions. You can operate all devices that are controlled by a remote control.
- The first time you open "Watch On" you have to set up a new room. First, enter a name for it.
- Before you can set up other devices, you must first set up the remote control for a television. If you don't have a TV in this room, you can simply set up a fictional device.
- The next step is to enter your postcode and then your TV provider so that the TV program can be displayed.
- Once you have done that, you can finally start setting up the actual remote control. To do this, tap the remote control icon in the upper right corner. Now select the brand of your TV or tap "Projector" if you are using one.
- The program now sends different IR codes to test which one is required for your device. To do this, switch the device to be operated to standby and then press the "Switch on symbol" in Watch On. If the television has switched on as a result, tap on "Code is valid". If not, select "test next code".
- When the TV has responded, choose whether to use your TV or a set-top box to receive your program. The remote control is then configured.
- You can now add more devices by pressing the menu button on your S4 while in remote control mode. Select "Add new device". Follow the same steps as above. You can also add more rooms with new TVs.
Incidentally, the stereo system is called "AV Receiver" in Watch On. Read about the best LCD TVs in this practical tip.
