Satellite receiver: short circuit at the LNB - what to do?
If your satellite receiver no longer displays an image after you have connected an antenna cable, you could have caused a short circuit on the LNB. In this case, your receiver is practically over. If you are lucky, only the cable will be blown - we will show you in this article how to test this and remedy such a short circuit.
Short circuit at the LNB: the end for a satellite receiver
The LNB on a satellite receiver is usually permanently installed. It is hardly possible to repair this yourself. If the receiver is expensive, contact customer service and inquire about any repair costs. Often the problem is not with the LNB itself:
- If you attach a LNB connector to a satellite cable, slightly isolated fine wires can get into the socket. If they come into contact with the copper wire, there is a short circuit in the cable.
- If there was a short circuit in the satellite cable, the separation of the cable ends helps.
Repair short circuit on the satellite cable
If a cable burns out, this usually happens at the end of the cable. If you are lucky, your receiver is not defective. To repair a satellite cable, follow these steps:
- Unplug part of the satellite cable generously on the receiver side - at least 10 cm may be.
- Then use a kitchen or carpet knife to carefully separate approx. 2 cm of the outer rubber insulation. Be careful not to damage the outer fine wires.
- Now place all fine wires on one side of the cable and twist them together.
- Wrap the twisted cables around the inner plastic insulation - but be careful not to touch the copper wire!
- Now run the cable end through an LNB adapter and use the thread to screw it tight to the cable. If available, you should take a new LNB connector.
- The wire should protrude a few millimeters above the LNB connector above the LNB connector. If you have exposed too much wire, snap off a short piece.
