Determine the freedom class: how it works

There are several ways to determine the damage-free class for motor vehicle insurance. We'll show you the options and how to do it.
Determine the freedom class: the basics
- Novice drivers start with car insurance with damage-free class 0. For each accident-free year, you are upgraded to a damage-free class.
- If you have had a driver's license for more than three years, you often start with your car insurance in damage-free class 0.5. You can also get into a higher class with accompanied driving or insurance through family members.
- Upgrading the damage-free class is only possible up to a certain limit. Depending on the insurance, the damage-free class 35 or level 27 ends.
- You can inquire about the current damage-free class at any time on the hotline of your car insurance. The class can also be found online in the customer login and on the last invoice for the contribution payment.
Calculate the damage-free class after the accident
- If you were responsible for an accident yourself, you will be classified in a lower damage-free class for the following year. You will not only lose one class, but several classes. The insurance premium increases again.
- How far you are downgraded depends on your current damage-free class, the number of accidents and the insurance. Simply search online for the "downgrading table" of your car insurance.
- If you do not want to be downgraded in your damage-free class, you can pay the damage incurred out of your own pocket. Depending on the size of the damage and the newly calculated insurance premium, this process can be worthwhile.
- Our tip: Take a look at the car insurance in the price test by Stiftung Warentest. You can often find cheaper insurance with the same benefits.
Non-damage class: difference between liability and fully comprehensive
- If you have taken out comprehensive insurance in addition to motor vehicle liability, damage-free classes are calculated separately for both types of insurance. Without an accident, the classes are on the same level.
- However, if you are responsible for an accident, you will be upgraded to the insurance concerned. If it is a liability damage, the damage-free class of the comprehensive insurance remains unaffected. The same applies the other way round.
