Vinyl records: which playback speed is the right one?
The playback speed can be changed for each turntable. But what is the right setting for your records? We'll explain it to you.
How to find out the correct playback speed of your vinyls
The playback speed is always given in revolutions per minute (abbreviation: rpm). Above all, the speeds of 33 1/3 and 45 rpm have become established. Depending on the type of vinyl, you will need to use a different setting:
- LPs with a diameter of 12 inches should always be played at 33 1/3 rpm. You can recognize these large LPs by the fact that you fill out the entire turntable.
- Singles and EPs - the smaller vinyls - need a speed of 45 revolutions per minute.
- There are also a few records that have to be played at 78 rpm. These are usually the very first vinyls to hit the market. Current turntables usually no longer support this speed.
- Tip: If you are unsure of which record you are holding, you can also look at the label. The correct playback speed is usually noted there (see screenshot). Apart from that, you notice an incorrect setting at the latest when playing the vinyl.
To improve the sound of your records, you should clean them regularly. This practical tip tells you what you should consider.
