Wiper blades wear out over time. While you used to change them regularly in the past, you can cut them now. We explain to you how to cut your wiper blades and which tool works best.
Windshield wiper blades: the re-cutting simply explained
Worn windshield wipers not only leave unsightly streaks on the windshield, the impaired view is also dangerous. In the worst case, the used wiper rubbers can also damage the window. In the past, these windshield wiper blades were happily exchanged, usually once or twice a year. Nowadays you can also cut them. With this step-by-step guide it works:
- Fold the windscreen wiper forward and straighten the wiper blade.
- Remove any dirt from the wiper blades (ideally with a sponge and a dry cloth).
- Tailors usually have a groove. Here you thread the wiper so that you feel resistance.
- Cut along the wiper with light pressure.
- Clean the wiper again with a wet sponge.
- Finally, check the result by turning on the wiper. If streaks are still visible, repeat the process until the window is free of streaks.
What else you should consider when re-cutting
It is not always advisable to use a trimmer to process the wiper blades. After a certain time, you have to replace the sheets.
- If the rubbers are already old and hardened, re-cutting no longer brings the desired improvement.
- The same applies if the wipers are too cold. It is often worthwhile to dismantle the wiper blades and cut them at room temperature.
- If you do not succeed in re-cutting, you will have to buy new leaves. The cut wipers are then usually no longer usable. It is therefore worthwhile to have spare wipers on hand.
