Drums for children: you should pay attention to this when buying
If your youngster would like to become a drummer, you can support the interest in music by buying a drum kit for children. In order to find the right musical instrument among the offered drums, we will show you an overview of what is important.
Children's drums - a short introduction
If you are looking for a drum kit for children, you will be faced with some terms that may be strange to you. To help you find your way around in this jungle, we will explain the most important names for the boilers.
- The bass drum is the bass drum in the center of the drums. It is operated with the foot.
- The snare drum is the small drum in front of the player.
- Tom 1 and Tom 2 are the first two drums over the bass drum.
- The drum next to the bass drum is called Tom 3. This drum is also called floor tom.
- You should know these terms if you are looking for a suitable drum kit for your child.
The right shell sizes for children's drums
So that your child does not lose the fun of drumming, the drums and their cauldron should have the appropriate sizes for their age.
- A bass drum of 18 inches is best for children between 7 and 10 years old. The snare drum should be 13 or 14 inches in size. 10 inches are recommended for Tom 1, 12 inches for Tom 2 and 14 inches for Tom 3.
- If your child is between 10 and 14 years old, it is best to drum with a bass drum of 20 inches. The snare drum should still be between 13 and 14 inches in size. Nothing changes in the boiler sizes of Tom 1 and Tom 2 either. With the Tom 3, either use a size of 14 inches as usual or switch to 16 inches.
- Children from the age of 14 are already drumming on larger cauldrons. Here the bass drum already has a size of 22 inches. With the other boilers, nothing changes compared to the previous information.
- If you would like to surprise your child with a drum kit as a gift, the best price is to choose the golden middle ground. These cheap models are mostly poorly made. The child then quickly loses the joy of making music.
- However, a very expensive musical instrument is hardly worthwhile, especially for smaller children. After all, they grow out of the drums like out of shoes. With increasing age, new boilers are necessary.
