iPhone and iPad: change the default font using the jailbreak app
As so often, you need a jailbreak for profound system changes. How to unlock your iPhone and iPad with the current iOS 9, you will learn in a separate guide. After installing Cydia, you can start with the font:
- Open Cydia and switch to the "Search" tab.
- Look for the free "BytaFont 2" tool here and install it.
- A new icon will appear on your home screen. Tap on it to start "BytaFont 2".
- In the "Basic" tab you can see all currently installed fonts. Select the desired font and then tap "Apply and Respring". Your iDevice will restart with the selected font.
Install new iPhone fonts - so go ahead
So that you can use "BytaFont 2" correctly, you need the right font, of course. You can choose to use Cydia or the app itself:
- In the Cydia "Sections" tab, select the entry "Fonts (BytaFont 2)". Here you will find numerous fonts for your iDevice. Make sure that the respective font is suitable for your iOS version. You can find information about this either in the title or in the description. Install the desired files and restart your device. You will then find the font in the BytaFont app under "Basic".
- Alternatively, start "BytaFont 2" and switch to the "Browse" tab. Here you will also find a lot of free fonts that you can activate directly.
- Tip: In the "Advanced" section of the BytaFonts app, you can explicitly choose for which areas you want to activate the font. For example, you only adapt the font of the camera app or the home screen.
Install fonts without jailbreak with app
You can save yourself a lot of effort if you use a simple app to install new fonts.
- If you download the "AnyFont" app to your iPhone or iPad, you can install and use additional TrueTypeFonts or OpenTypeFonts on your mobile phone.
- You cannot replace the general font of your iPhone. However, you can use the additional fonts in Word, Numbers, Pages, Powerpoint and many other iOS apps.
- The practical tool is not free, but it is affordable. Currently (as of 2018) you pay 2.29 for the app.
