SD Express is the new standard for SD cards from 2020. The modern storage media should offer significantly higher data rates and be available in different versions. You can find the individual information in this article.
SD Express: details presented
Over the next few months, the first SD Express memory cards will be introduced as the new standard for mobile storage expansions. The focus is on low energy consumption and high data rates.
- Data rates : Up to 985 MB / s
- Volt rails : A 1.8 volt rail and 3.3 volt rail are used. 1.2 volt rails are planned. This makes the SD cards more energy efficient.
- PIN rows : 2 at the start of sales. Will likely be expanded by 2 rows of PINs in the future.
- Possible storage capacity : Thanks to the planned SDUC storage models (SD Ultra Capacity), capacities of up to 128 TB should be possible.
- The practical: The new SD cards will be backwards compatible . This means that they can also be used in older devices. However, the SD card can only be as fast as the respective connection allows. If it is out of date, the SD Express card works more slowly . In this case, the data rates can drop to 104 MB / s.
SD Express: Variants
The SD Express memory cards will be available in different versions. Like the well-known SD and microSD cards, they are suitable for different devices and have special properties:
- SD Express: Equipped with PCI Express interface (3rd generation). An NVMe 1.3 protocol is also available. This ensures that more commands can be processed simultaneously with the lowest possible latency.
- microSD Express: Specially designed for smartphones and devices with a micro standard to save energy thanks to PCIe 3.1 low-power mode. NVMe 1.3 interface also available.
- These will be available in different memory sizes. The focus is on the newly introduced Ultra Capacity (UC I) with a maximum storage capacity of 128 TB. In addition, the well-known high capacity cards (HC I) with 4 to 32 GB and extended capacity SD (XC I) with 63 GB to 2 TB are offered as memory sizes.
