SD card for filming - class and speed?
If you need an SD card for filming, you should pay close attention to class and speed. We show you what is important when buying.
SD card for filming: What class and speed do I need?
- SD cards are classified into classes from 2 to 10. Class 2 cards write at a speed of at least 2 MB / s, class 10 cards at least 10 MB / s.
- The UHS-I and UHS-II standards have also been around for a few years. The write speed remains at least 10 MB / s, but reads are up to 104 or 312 MB / s. Such cards are particularly suitable for 4K recordings.
- In principle, of course, the higher the writing speed, the better. However, the price rises at the same time.
- You will find the minimum write speed in the manual for your camera. The SD card should at least reach this value, but if possible exceed it. After a while the recording speed can slow down a bit.
SD card for filming: How much storage do I need?
- You can also save some money on storage: if you are filming for a very long time, but not in one piece, two smaller SD cards may be cheaper than one with twice as much storage.
- Depending on the camera, 16 GB of memory is enough for around an hour of film material. In the case of higher or poorer quality, these values can, however, also be exceeded or fallen short of.
