The browser hijacker search.webshields.org often gets onto your computer via freeware. You can find out how to remove the software in this guide.
Delete search.webshields.org using Control Panel
As soon as you notice advertisements or changed settings in your web browser, you should first remove the entries of the hijacker from the system.
- For Windows XP / Vista / 7 navigate to "Start"> "Control Panel"> "Uninstall Programs". For Windows 8/10, type "Control Panel" in the search field and then go to "Uninstall a program". Confirm access as administrator on request.
- Look for an entry similar to Web Shield or other eye-catching program entries that you don't know.
- Install a malware scanner and scan your PC with it.
- You may find other unwanted programs with the software. Remove them from your PC too.
- You can then exit the control panel.
Remove search.webshields.org from browser
The extension affects all common browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.
- For Google Chrome, type "chrome: // extensions" in the address bar. Navigate to "Extensions" and remove any add-ons you don't know. If you are not sure, you can deactivate it before deleting it.
- In Mozilla Firefox, enter "about: addons" in the address bar. Look at the extensions there and delete everything that says nothing to you.
- In Internet Explorer, click on the three dots in the bar at the top right and then select "Extensions". Check which extensions you don't know. To remove it, click the gear icon and then click the "Uninstall" button.
- Alternatively, you can also reset your browser completely. We have the appropriate instructions for Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.
- Finally, use tools such as AdwCleaner and have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan your PC again to really remove any remaining file from your system.
