How long has Facebook been around? The genesis
Facebook is so ubiquitous that the question of how long the social network has existed has hardly been asked. The history of the social media company is actually very exciting: Facebook has managed to create an incredible success story over the course of a few years.
Facebook: A short story from the beginning to global success
Obviously, a large portion of boldness makes it easier to get through life. The Facebook success story once again clearly demonstrates this thesis. Mark Zuckerberg's success ultimately stems from the fact that he stole and illegally published the data and images of his fellow students.
- In 2003, Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg hacked into the database of his dormitory. But that's not all, he was so bold as to download the personal data and pictures of his fellow students.
- He then published the pictures with his self-written program Facemash. The purpose of the campaign was to amuse the users who were allowed to decide which pictures are "hot or not".
- However, this was less funny than outrageous, since hardly any of the involuntary "actors" in this questionable competition were asked for permission beforehand. The university management probably saw it that way and the site was removed from the network.
- Zuckerberg was nevertheless able to record some success with the site and this encouraged him to continue. At the beginning of 2004, Zuckerberg launched TheFacebook, which immediately caused trouble: Three of his Harvard fellow students claimed that Zuckerberg had stolen the idea from them a few days after TheFacebook was online. Nevertheless, the stone had started to roll and the success of Facebook was unstoppable
- After just a few weeks, countless Harvard students were members of TheFacebook. Word spread quickly about the existence of the social media portal, and shortly afterwards students from other universities such as Yale, Columbia, Stanford and Yale were caught by the wave of enthusiasm.
- Zuckerberg brought some fellow students on board and soon he moved out of the Harvard dormitory. In the summer of 2004 the first office was opened in Palo Alto and shortly afterwards the first investor arrived. The former managing director of PayPal, Peter Thiel, supported the aspiring company with an injection of around 450, 000 euros.
- In 2006, Facebook made its final breakthrough with its news feed, and just four years later, the social media network recorded over a billion page views per month.
- Facebook's goodwill in May 2012 was around $ 5 billion in May 2012, just nine years after it started in a student residence in Harvard. Today, the social network is worth well over 300 billion euros and employs around 30, 000 people worldwide.
