Cartoons can be created in many ways. We give you valuable tips for a successful start. The CHIP dancer accompanies you on the way.
The painting
No animation without drawing. If you need drawing tips, one of the many comic tutorials like Comic Zoo's can help you.
- You'll need a soft pencil for sketches, thick permanent markers, or a pen for the lines, and comic markers for coloring.
- Paint scene backgrounds on paper. You either draw and cut out the foreground on paper or use foil. It is best to paint the latter from behind so that the color is evenly distributed on the front.
- Take pictures of your finished drawings or scan them. Make sure that the lighting is even for photos. The drawings do not have to be perfect, you can still make changes on the computer.
- Of course, you can also create individual elements or the entire drawing on the computer. On CHIP Online you can get the Krita software for creating cartoon and anime drawings, storyboards, illustrations and textures for free.
Image processing on the computer
On the computer, you can use image processing programs to correct drawing errors, create additional images from an original image and make the background transparent.
- For small corrections, image editing programs such as GIMP, Pain.NET and Inkscape are suitable, all of which are available free of charge from CHIP. Paid programs such as Adobe Photoshop are also very good for this.
- Programs such as MonkeyJam, Pencil, Anime Studio, Plastic Animation Paper and Adobe Illustrator are suitable to not only edit single images, but to create series of images with a chronological course, some of which are available free of charge. Drawing with a drawing tablet computer is particularly easy here.
- Most of the programs have forums and introductory videos on YouTube. You can find good video instructions for "Adobe Illustrator" on VideotoBrain, for example. The manufacturer page of "Anime Studio" contains plenty of tutorials.
- With the free Android app Stick Draw you can create whole animations on your tablet or smartphone.
- GIF animations are a simple method. You can create them for example with "GIMP" or the freeware Ulead GIF Animator Lite - alternatively also with the more extensive, but fee-based full version. Simply insert your pictures in the correct order and specify in the "Global information" how often the animation should be repeated. However, GIF animations do not support sound.
- If you also want to put sound under the video, Windows Movie Maker or Virtual Dub are suitable programs.
- Here are short instructions for creating videos from single images in Windows Movie Maker and Virtual Dub.
Create cartoons in Windows Movie Maker
Only four small steps are necessary to create a video from individual images:
- Click "Add Videos and Photos" and select all the frames. Then arrange them in the correct order if necessary.
- If you not only want to play the individual images one after the other, but want to blend them with effects, click on the image you want to crossfade to and select one of the "visual effects".
- With a click on "Add music" you can put an audio file under the video.
- Now save the project as a video. This is exactly how the CHIP dancer video was created.
