Many couples wonder about a caesarean section, when you can start having sex again. Since this is something very individual, it is usually not possible to give a clear answer. However, both should consider some things after the birth.
Sex after caesarean section - how long do you have to wait?
Basically, there is no prescribed period after the caesarean section in which sex would be excluded. Nevertheless, you can orient yourself on a few important facts:
- A caesarean section creates a wound in the woman that is sutured. This takes time to heal and grow back together. You should therefore generally refrain from sex for at least two weeks, because the wound edges are not yet completely closed during this time.
- However, during this time both parents will be busy growing into the new parent role and other aspects such as the baby and family life will be in the foreground.
- The birth canal also takes time to heal and expel the weekly flow. After a caesarean section, however, this is usually not as severe as the uterus is usually scraped out during the operation. So you decide individually when you feel ready and wound healing has progressed far enough.
- Even if you feel like your partner again shortly after the Caesarean section, that's okay. And if this is not the case, this is also completely normal. Be careful not to stress yourself or put pressure on yourself. After all, there is no hurry.
Sex after the Caesarean section - you should note that
If you feel ready, your caesarean section wound has healed well and you feel pleasure, nothing should stand in the way of sex after birth. Here are just a few things to keep in mind:
- If you want to have sex after the caesarean section and the weekly flow is not yet complete, you should definitely use a condom as there is still an increased risk of infection.
- In addition, the vaginal mucosa is often too dry during breastfeeding before the normal female cycle has returned. This results from the low estrogen level. With water-based lubricants, however, this problem can be counteracted and sex is still possible without pain.
- It is often helpful if the woman first determines the positions during sexual intercourse. So it can vary the intensity and angle of penetration of the male sex. Talk to your partner and tell them where you want to be touched and where it still hurts. So it is easier for him too.
- The post-natal gymnastics that you should do after the caesarean section can also help to make sex more pleasant and intense after childbirth. If your breasts hurt, breastfeeding your baby before sex can help.
- A special scar oil is recommended for maintaining the caesarean section scar, which makes the tissue supple and elastic again.
