Switch on the secure WPA password for the WiFi router: how it works
If your router still uses the old WEP encryption for your WLAN, you should urgently switch on the WPA standard. We'll show you how it's done.
Enable WPA encryption in the router
The following instructions apply to all routers. However, the display of options differs in each model. On the right in the picture you can see the solution for the Fritzbox.
- Open your router's user interface. This can often be called up using the IP address "192.168.1.1".
- In the menu, look for the settings for your WLAN and options such as "Security" or "Encryption".
- Select the "WPA encryption" there.
- Now you can often decide whether you only want to use WPA or WPA2, or whether both standards should be supported. WPA2 is much more secure, but it may be that older WLAN-enabled devices can only use the WPA standard. We therefore recommend choosing the "WPA + WPA2" option.
- Enter your WiFi password and click "Apply", "OK", or "Save".
