SIM card for the Egypt vacation: A comparison
When traveling to Egypt, the question arises whether a prepaid SIM card is a wise option. After all, a minute's call from Egypt to home with the German SIM card costs three euros.
There are three major network operators in Egypt with their own prepaid SIM cards
On vacation on site, you often have the choice of buying into a relatively expensive WiFi network in your hotel or starting out in an Internet café. In the meantime, the competition between the three major Egyptian providers MOBINIL, VODAFONE and ETISALAT has resulted in prices for mobile internet being comparable to those at home. This results in a comparison of at least three options.
- Please do not use your cell phone with the German SIM card in Egypt. The cost of this will simply bring tears to your eyes. This applies to phone calls as well as surfing the Internet. As an exception, of course, emergency calls can apply here.
- All German network operators also offer so-called international options. You can book this via the homepage of your respective provider or on site by SMS. These options are usually a little cheaper than the international fees in your standard tariff. But here, too, the prices are still quite high.
- For your Egypt holiday, please purchase your own prepaid SIM card on site - either at the airport, at a kiosk in a hotel or at one of the many sales outlets. A Vodafone Holiday prepaid card costs £ 20 (€ 2). You can then top up the credit on site. A one-minute call to Germany costs 36 cents. 400 MB data volume make a slim one euro. And the SMS costs 97 cents. Telephone calls via the Internet (VoIP) via Skype or WhatsApp are blocked by the provider.
