If you are planning a vacation or a longer stay in Austria, a separate SIM card can be useful. We show what you should pay attention to and which offer suits you best.
SIM card for Austria - is that necessary at all?
You should clarify in advance whether it makes sense to have your own SIM card. If you are only in Austria for a few weeks, you can use your German card almost without restrictions.
- Romaing fees have been abolished within the EU since mid-2017. Travel temporarily to other EU countries, surf and call there at the cost that you would also have in Germany.
- However, this is limited by the so-called fair use regulation, which can be set differently by each provider. It is intended to prevent cheap mobile phone contracts from being concluded in other EU countries and then to use them permanently in your home country.
- For example, it is possible to limit use abroad to a certain number of days per year. You have to ask your mobile service provider how high the limit is.
Mobile tariffs in Austria: offers and costs
If you move to Austria for several months, you can hardly get around your own mobile phone contract. The good news: Austrian contracts are usually cheaper than in Germany.
- There are three major network operators in Austria: A1, T-Mobile and Drei. All providers have very good network coverage in the country.
- The best way to find the right tariff for you is to use an online comparison portal such as tarife.at. Enter your monthly usage volume here and then see the appropriate tariffs.
- In the filter list on the left you can choose whether you are looking for a tariff with a contract or on a prepaid basis (prepaid card).
- The contract term is also likely to be relevant. Under "Binding" you choose between "2 years", "1 year" and "Without commitment".
- The tariffs are comparatively cheap. You can get 10 GB of data in prepaid form for just 10 euros. Contracts with telephone flat, SMS flat and 5 GB LTE start at less than 15 euros.
