SketchUp: Change unit of measure - how it works
If you want to change the unit of measurement in SketchUp, you can either set this for the current drawing or in general. We show you how to proceed in detail.
SketchUp: Change the unit of measurement for the current drawing
If you only want to change the unit of measurement for a current modeling, you can do this via the menu in Google SketchUp.
- In SketchUp, open the model for which you want to change the units and select the "Model info" item in the "Window" menu.
- You can find the units of measurement under the "Units" tab. Here you can choose between millimeters, centimeters, meters, inches and feet. In the "Precision" setting you can also specify the number of decimal places.
- If you confirm your settings, the unit of measure for the current project is changed.
Change default dimensions in Google SketchUp
If you want to work with a specific unit of measurement as standard, you can define this in the program settings.
- Here, too, you will find the corresponding menu item under the "Window" menu. Select the "Settings" sub-item here.
- You will find the "Templates" tab in the "System Settings" dialog box. The descriptions of the individual templates indicate which unit of measurement is used in the template.
- Select the template with the desired unit of measurement and confirm the selection by clicking "OK".
- However, this new setting has no effect on models that are already open. It only applies to future projects.
You can create 3D models with Sketchup. You will find an introduction to this in our next practical tip.
