Skype: Tips for a better connection
Skype is probably the best known VoIP software. Learn how to improve your telephony or video chat connection here.
The most common connection problems with Skype
- Is your firewall blocking Skype? Is there an active internet connection at all? If the Skype icon is gray and the "Call" button on contacts is faded, Skype cannot connect to the Internet. First check with a browser whether you are even able to access the Internet. If not, add Skype as an exception in the firewall of your security / antivirus software - you can find out how in the help section of the respective program or on the manufacturer's homepage. Read here how you can deactivate the Windows firewall yourself.
- If Skype can connect to the Internet, but the quality of the call is extremely poor, this indicates a low transmission rate. Please note that a data rate of at least 30 kbit / s is required for calls and a 128 kbit / s for screen transmissions or video calls - 100 kbit / s or 300 kbit / s are required for the best quality. More information and a detailed list can be found on the official Skype support page.
- Often, alleged "connection problems" are also due to something very banal - for example, that you have muted the speakers or the webcam has been deactivated. It is also always worth checking that the headphone / microphone plugs are connected correctly.
- Also keep in mind that the problems can not only be due to you or your connection, but to that of your counterpart. If necessary, inform him / her of this practical tip via messenger chat or email.
Possible solutions for the faulty connection
- Add the contact "echo123", this is a Skype bot to test the connection. Call him and follow the instructions to check how good your quality - or volume - really is.
- Run a speed test and see what type of call your connection is most likely to qualify for. You can find out exactly how this works in our practical tip.
- If you want to make calls via Skype, it is best to end all downloads / uploads beforehand, as these can draw a lot of bandwidth and thus deteriorate the quality. Also ask the other person to do the same.
Alternatively, download the free software "Microsoft Network Monitor" here. This allows you to monitor your active applications and find out which of them use a lot of bandwidth.
