Set up Smart Lock in Android
With Android 5.0 Lollipop, the Smart Lock can be set up for the first time on a smartphone or tablet. In this practical tip, we explain what the Smart Lock is and how you can set it up on your Android device.
Smart Lock from Android 5.0 Lollipop
With Smart Lock, you can set the device settings so that your Android device automatically unlocks as soon as your smartphone or tablet is connected to a trusted Bluetooth device, you are in a trusted area or the device uses the camera to face your face identified.
- The "Smart Lock" function is available from Android operating version 5.0 Lollipop and can be activated in the device settings.
- Before you set up the Smart Lock, you should make sure that your smartphone or tablet is equipped with the latest Android update. An update can fix the initial errors of the function that occurred in the first versions of Lollipop.
Android: Set up Smart Lock
A Google Nexus 5 with the operating version Android Lollipop 5.0.1 was used for these instructions.
- Run the "Settings" application on your smartphone or tablet and select "Security" under "Users".
- If you do not already have a screen lock, you will now receive a message that you need to set it up. To do this, follow the instructions on your display to set a password, a PIN code or a pattern.
- Make a note of your screen lock if necessary, as you will have to re-enter it if you change your Smart Lock information.
- Now activate the Smart Lock function if it should be deactivated. To do this, go to "Trust Agents" in the security menu via "Advanced", where you can swipe the Smart Lock feature to "On".
Add trusted devices, places, or trusted face
As soon as you have ensured that the Smart Lock function is activated on your smartphone or tablet, add a trusted device, place or so-called "Trusted Face" to your Android device in order to automatically activate your device to unlock. The latter is facial recognition, which unlocks your smartphone or tablet as soon as it identifies you.
- Go to "Settings" again and select the "Security" area under "Users".
- Now select the "Smart Lock" option under "Screen security" and enter your PIN code, password or pattern here.
- In a final step, choose one of the Smart Lock options by selecting it and following the instructions below.
- If you have successfully set up a Smart Lock option, the next time you activate the display you will see a pulsating circle in the lower area of the display around the lock symbol shown.
