Play Smart TV recordings on PC - so it'll work
If you have saved your Smart TV recordings on an external hard drive or a USB stick, you can also play them back on the PC. We'll show you how.
Play Smart TV recordings on the PC
There are several ways to transfer the recordings of your Smart TV to the PC. Here we present the safest and easiest method, which nevertheless takes a few detours. These instructions apply to Smart TVs from Samsung. Recordings on TVs from other manufacturers may not be able to be transmitted in this way.
- Note: The tool used here has not been updated for several years. One of the reasons for this is that Samsung has increasingly encrypted the recordings.
- Especially on newer devices, the following instructions can no longer be carried out. Devices of the ES series are not supported at all. If you have installed a software update for an older Samsung TV, this can also hinder the process.
Transfer from USB stick or external hard drive
- If the recordings are on a USB stick or an external hard drive, you cannot simply drag the file onto the computer. Windows denies this. However, it is possible on Ubuntu or Linux.
- Download the VMware Player program and install it. This allows you to install Ubuntu as a virtual system. Ubuntu can be downloaded here.
- Alternatively, you can boot your computer with a Linux CD. To do this, download Knoppix and burn it to CD. If you restart your computer with the CD, a Linux system is available.
- Connect the external hard drive or the USB stick to your computer and open the drive. You now have access to the recording unlike in Windows. Drag all files from disk to another disk or your hard drive.
- Now return to Windows. You now only need the DeSTRoi tool. It can be used to decrypt the recording.
- Start the DeSTRoi.exe file. Click on the "Open" button and navigate to the storage location of the recording. Open the file with the extension SRF.
- Click on the "Select" button on the right to determine the storage location. That's what happens with the "Decrypt" button.
- The decrypted file is then saved in TS format. For example, it can be opened with Windows Media Player.
- Note: If the file cannot be decrypted, select another "key entry" above.
- If you would like to convert the file into a more common format such as AVI or WMV, we recommend the Freemake Video Converter for conversion.
