For longer holidays, ask the provider about international options
If you are just on vacation for a longer period of time, you should find out from your provider about international options. How to save some roaming charges.
- Making calls and sending SMS is not too expensive within the EU. But if you also want to check e-mails or stay in touch with friends and relatives via WhatsApp and Co., this can result in a hefty bill. Because data roaming is still relatively expensive.
- If you are traveling outside the EU, you should rather refrain from making a lot of calls. Depending on the country group, more than two euros are collected per minute.
Tip for long stays abroad
If you are planning a long stay abroad, you should not use your German prepaid or contract card. For example, if you are going abroad as an au pair or are planning a semester abroad, you should find out about the mobile operators in your travel destination.
- You can buy prepaid cards cheaply in every country. It is significantly cheaper to surf with the domestic prepaid card or send an SMS.
- You can of course also make calls with the domestic prepaid cards. However, it is even cheaper if you call your loved ones at home from a call shop or skype with your laptop using a WiFi connection.
