Recording programs on TV with the SmartTV is not difficult - you only need an external hard drive or a large USB stick.
What you need to record programs with the SmartTV
The practical tip refers to the "Samsung SmartTV UE40D6500". For other models, the recording should work similarly. If you have a newer Samsung SmartTV model (built from 2013), please follow the recording method for models from 2013. You need this for the recording:
- An empty, external hard drive or a large USB stick (about 75 - 100 Mb are required per minute of HDTV, so 500 GB are enough for approx. 50 films in HD). Depending on how many minutes you want to record, find the appropriate size of the storage medium.
- A suitable USB cable to the storage medium.
Format the hard drive via the SmartTV
To be able to record programs, you must first connect the hard drive to the television using the USB cable. Now you have to wait a while for the TV to recognize the hard drive and then do the following:
- As soon as the hard disk has been recognized, a window opens in which you must click "Close".
- Now press the "Smart button".
- In the smart menu go to "TV recording" and press "OK".
- A message appears stating that the hard drive must be formatted to record programs. So do not leave important data on the hard disk! Confirm with "Yes".
- In the next window click "OK" again.
- You are now advised that all data will be deleted. Go back to "Yes". Now the device is formatted.
- When formatting is complete, you can start recording.
Record TV programs with SmartTV (models up to 2013)
- Now go out of the smart menu.
- Press the "Record" button on your remote control.
- You can now set the recording length while the recording is running. Then click on "OK".
- Stop the recording with the "Stop" button on your remote control.
Record TV programs with Smart TV (models from 2013)
In particular, new SmartTV models from Samsung that were sold from 2013 (e.g. UE40F6500) no longer have a "record button" on the remote control. There are two ways to record a program: Either you program the recording using the electronic program guide (EPG) or you start manual recording using the smart remote control, which is included as a second remote control.
- Recording via EPG: Press the "Guide" button on one of the two remote controls. Find the program you want to record and press the "Confirm" button. Then select "Program recording". However, you can only record programs that are in the future.
- Recording with a smart remote control: Samsung has included a second remote control with touch control as standard for the SmartTV models from 2012 onwards. You can still record programs manually using this smart remote control. To do this, press the "More" button. Then swipe right on the touch panel and navigate to the "red dot" (see image). Press the touch pad to start manual recording.
- When recording via EPG, the recording is automatically stopped at the end of the program. When you have started the recording with the smart remote control, press "More" again, swipe to the right on the touch field and then select the white square ("Stop").
Reserve programs with the SmartTV
With the program guide you can reserve programs and then simply switch off your television.
- So you do not have to be present when the selected program is recorded.
Watch TV recording
- Press the "Smart" button again to access the Smart menu.
- Go to "TV Recordings". Now you can watch your recording.
