SodaStream Crystal in practice test - what is it good for?
Conclusion: The SodaStream Crystal is a chic and at the same time highly reliable water bubbler. Once you have it, you never give it back - at least that's my experience. Lugging water boxes and environmentally harmful plastic bottles are a thing of the past. Because the SodaStream bubbles delicious water, where I can determine the amount of carbon dioxide myself. This does require some practice, but works extremely well in everyday life. No electricity is required for bubbling, so that the SodaStream can be placed anywhere in the kitchen. The supplied glass carafes are very solid and survive even small falls without problems. In addition, they look quite classy and look great even when you visit. The self-bubbled water is not cheaper than mineral water at the discounter. Because a new CO2 cartridge costs between five and nine euros. It is enough for about 50 liters of tap water, which is considered healthier anyway. I am still very satisfied with the SodaStream Crystal even after several years. The successor version Crystal 2.0 also corrects small quirks and is somewhat more stable. In my view, it is therefore the best choice for anyone looking for a water bubbler at home.
SodaStream Crystal in practice test: advantages and disadvantages at a glance
- Advantages: no more dragging mineral water, simple operation, works without electricity, stylish design.
- Disadvantages: Stability wears off over time, replacing an empty CO2 cartridge with a full one is relatively expensive.

SodaStream Crystal: scope of delivery and price
Around three years ago I bought the SodaStream Crystal in the color "Titan" on site at Real. At that time, Real had the SodaStream Crystal on offer with a total of three glass carafes and beverage syrup for 119 euros. SodaStream has now launched a successor product - the SodaStream Crystal 2.0. According to the manufacturer, it should close more easily and has a stainless steel housing. The first generation SodaStream Crystal tested here has the following scope of delivery:
- 3 glass carafes with a capacity of 0.6 l each
- a SodaStream Crystal version 1.0
- a CO2 bottle with a capacity of 60 l
- different types of beverage syrup
Practice test: What is the SodaStream Crystal good for?
- Setup: The SodaStream Crystal was almost ready when I took it out of the box. All I had to do was insert the CO2 cartridge and screw the CO2 bottle in. I had a gas bottle in my hand for the first time, but it worked smoothly. So that you do not see the CO2 bottle, a cover must be put on afterwards. It can be clicked in very easily by pressing and the SodaStream looks chic again.
- Bubbling water: If the CO2 cartridge is still full, it bubbles the water with a lot of pressure. A short press on the button is enough and the water is already carbonated. If you press too long, the water overflows. "Medium" is then impossible - you have to let the water stand for a few minutes so that the carbon dioxide can escape. But that doesn't bother at all. If the CO2 in the cartridge is running out, I have to press it for a very long time. Otherwise the water contains only a barely perceptible amount of carbon dioxide. The dosage is not easy and requires some practice.
- Glass carafes: The three supplied glass carafes are not only made of thick, robust glass, but also look very appealing. You can also be seen when you visit. They are also dishwasher safe. With their weight of over 600 grams plus water, they are often too heavy to take with you on the go.
- Cleaning: The SodaStream Crystal only needs to be cleaned very rarely. Since you can only officially bubble water (but you can also make champagne), there is not much to clean. The outer surfaces can be easily wiped with a damp cloth, as well as possible limescale deposits in the carafe cup.
Everyday test: water bubbler in daily use
- Continuous use: After three years of use, the SodaStream Crystal has no signs of wear. He still shines like on the first day. Age is noticeable when it bubbles, however: the SodaStream closes less smoothly and the stability of the SodaStream head has deteriorated. However, there are no problems with bubbling and the SodaStream in titanium still looks really chic.
- Cost: According to the manufacturer, a CO2 cartridge can bubble up to 60 liters of water. Then you can exchange them for a full cartridge for a fee - for around 8.50 euros. I find that quite expensive for self-bubbling tap water (about 14 cents per liter) - especially since the CO2 filling in everyday life is enough for a maximum of 45 to 50 liters. In return, I save having to drag the water boxes, and tap water is healthier anyway according to the Stiftung Warentest. There are also many pet stores that fill up SodaStream gas bottles (because of the aquariums). Here I only pay 5 to 6 euros, but I lose the guarantee.
- Beverage syrup: SodaStream sells numerous beverage syrups, which often also taste very tasty. They are simply poured into the water after bubbling - cola, sprite, elderberry spritzer, etc. are ready, but in everyday life it has been shown that this also works with normal (inexpensive) beverage syrups. And water tastes at least as good.

Almost without alternative: The SodaStream Crystal is top and is topped ...
For the SodaStream Crystal, I have a very clear purchase recommendation: The Crystal reliably bubbles delicious water, even after years. It looks chic and is long-lasting, although the stability decreases somewhat over time. The new CO2 cartridges ensure that even bubbled water is not cheaper than mineral water from the discounter. This saves hauling, transport and environmentally harmful plastic bottles. The glass carafes are too heavy for to-go, but they also make a lot of things when you visit. The bottom line is the SodaStream Crystal top, but it is topped by the new Crystal 2.0 edition. Because here some shortcomings like the stability and the locking mechanism have been repaired. That makes the SodaStream one of the best water bubblers. I don't see an even better alternative. Only those who want to have the bubbling removed can use the electric SodaStream Power.
