If your iPhone memory is full, you can clear it with various tricks. Because a lot of data is accumulating in the background that you don't need at all.
iPhone memory full: these methods help
- Resolution: Do not always film in the best resolution. A resolution of 720p is sufficient, especially for short clips. This saves you a lot of storage space. You can change the resolution under "Settings"> "Photos & Camera"> "Record video".
- Messenger: If you use messengers like iMessage and WhatsApp, you have probably saved a lot of old data unnecessarily. Go to "Settings" and open "Messages"> "Keep messages". Here you can specify when old messages should be deleted automatically.
- With WhatsApp you can select the option "Empty all chats" in the "Settings" under "Chats". However, the entire course is lost.
- HDR photos twice: If the exposure of an image is not optimal, this can be optimized with HDR. However, the old picture is also retained. Change this under "Settings"> "Photos & Camera" and flip the switch at "HDR"> "Keep photo".
- Automatic downloads of purchases: If you buy music via iTunes, it is automatically downloaded to all devices. Under "Settings"> iTunes & App Stores "you can specify exactly which purchases should be downloaded automatically.
- Optimize photos: You have the option to upload your photos to iCloud. To save a small version of the image on your device, go to "Settings"> "Photos & Camera"> "iCloud Photo Library" and select the "Optimize iPhone storage" option. You will then find the high-resolution image in the iCloud. There is only a small variant on the iPhone that does not use as much memory.
iPhone: Check storage space usage and delete apps
In addition to the tips, you should also take care of the installed apps. They also take up a lot of storage space:
- Go to "Settings"> "General".
- There you select "Use".
- All programs that are on your iPhone are displayed here.
- Click on an app and then remove it via "Delete app".
- Alternatively, you can delete apps by holding down an app icon on the home screen. As soon as the icons wiggle, you can delete the app by clicking on the "x".
Remove music and videos to create iPhone storage
Music and videos in particular often take up free space.
- Remove individual tracks under "Music". There are the tracks that you bought in the iTunes Store. Removing tracks from your device does not mean that you no longer have the songs. You’re still considered purchased in the iTunes Store.
- If you use a music streaming service such as Deezer and use the associated app, you can, for example, remove the offline data of the respective app.
iPhone: Remove deleted emails for storage
- Go to "Settings" and click on "Mail, Contacts, Calendar".
- Select your account, eg "Gmail". Then tap your account again.
- Then select "Advanced".
- Here you can decide, among other things, what should happen to deleted emails.
- Do not save them in an "archive", but move the emails to the "recycle bin".

Storage tip for iPhone: outsource apps and free up storage space
- As of iOS 11, you can outsource the respective apps in "Settings"> "Apps".
- The app will be uninstalled from your iPhone; however, all data will be kept.
- In this way, you can reinstall the app later without suffering data loss.
- You can now also see in iOS 11 in the app settings which files take up how much storage space.
- For example, you can delete the messages or remove pictures and photos with just one tap.
