Limit storage space for user accounts - how it works
If there are several user accounts, it is helpful to limit the storage space for individual accounts. For example, your offspring cannot clog the hard drive indefinitely with huge videos and films. Windows can manage storage quotas for this - we'll show you how to set them up.
Limit storage capacity for user account
- Start Windows Explorer. In the navigation area on the left under "Computer", right-click on the icon of the hard drive for which you want to set up storage quotas.
- Then select the "Properties" command in the context menu, activate the "Quota" tab in the following dialog and display the "Show quota settings". You need administrator rights for this, so that you may have to authorize the instruction by selecting an administrator account and entering the corresponding password.
- Place a checkmark in front of "Activate Quota Management" in order to provide user accounts with limited storage space. Also activate the option "Deny storage space if the quota limit is exceeded".
- Below you define a standard limit for new users. To regulate the storage space of existing user accounts, click on "Quota entries". Windows then presents a list of all known user accounts with their settings for the storage quota and the currently used storage space. It is displayed both as an absolute value and as a percentage in relation to the limited storage space.
- If an account is missing from the list, create a new entry for it with "Quota"> "New quota entry". To edit, double-click on the list entry of the desired user account. In the following dialog you determine the maximum storage space for the account and a warning level. Close the dialogs with "OK" or by clicking on the red cross symbol in the top right of the title bar.
- Note: When a user's amount of data reaches the warning level or storage quota limit, Windows displays a notification on the desktop.
Tip: Make your iPad child-proof too, so that your little ones do not accidentally download expensive apps and only use apps that you have approved.
