How to protect yourself from data theft with the Spotify Android app
Hackers don't have a summer break. After eBay, Spotify had to contact its users on May 27, 2014 to inform them about data theft and recommended protective measures. According to Spotify, only one user has been specifically affected. Nevertheless, the topic is taken seriously - for prevention. Here's what you can and should do if you use the music streaming service:
- If you have installed Spotify on your Android smartphone or tablet, you should immediately go to the Google Play store to install a new update. Spotify made this update available to plug a security hole in its Android app and prevent further data theft.
- To do this, go to the Play Store on your Android device and search for "Spotify".
- The previously installed Android app is no longer supported due to the security problems.
- Instead, Spotify recommends that its users install a brand new Android app called "Spotify Music". Attention: The offline player must be downloaded again - preferably with WiFi at home.
- Uninstall the "Spotify" app as soon as possible and download the new Android app "Spotify Music" from the Play Store.
- All other Spotify apps should not be endangered - only for Amazon a new version should follow soon. Nevertheless, the music streaming service explicitly recommends that customers log out and log in again in the next few days to be on the safe side.
