Control Spotify remotely - how it works
If you want to control Spotify remotely with another device, you do not need expensive special equipment: two compatible devices and the respective Spotiy app are sufficient. In this article we clarify what other requirements you have to meet.
Remote control Spotify - these are the requirements
- In principle, two or more Spotify clients can always control each other remotely in a local network. The only requirements are the Spotify apps or the desktop version. For some time now, remote control has even worked over the Internet - even if the devices are in different networks.
- Alternatively, you can also control an AV receiver that supports Spotify Connect. In the meantime, almost all amplifiers - even in the low-cost segment - have installed such a function.
- In order for all of this to work, however, you need a Spotify Premium account.
Versatile: remote control of Spotify from different devices
If you want to control the music on your laptop from your phone, all you have to do is open the Spotify app. Of course, you can also use your laptop to control your cell phone remotely or your smartphone with your tablet. There are almost no limits here. In all cases you proceed in a similar way. We explain it to you using the example of a cell phone:
- Connect both devices to the same network and play a song on your mobile phone with a premium account. Alternatively, a mobile data connection is sufficient on the smartphone or tablet.
- Subsequently, a note appears under the pause button that Spotify Connect is available.
- If you tap the message, the computer name of your laptop appears in a list next to your current device.
- Tap this and a moment later your song will sound from the cell phone through the laptop speakers.
Remote control Spotify - how to set up your receiver
If you use Spotify on your AV receiver, a remote control is especially handy. The only difference to other Spotify devices is that the receiver is a "one-way street". So it can only be controlled:
- Start the amplifier and make sure that there is an active connection to the network.
- With the mobile phone you have to be connected to the same network. In this case, Connect does not work via mobile communications.
- Start the Spotify client on the cell phone and play a song. The text "Spotify Connect available" appears under the pause button.
- Tap the message again and select the receiver from the list. Then wait a moment.
- After a few seconds you will hear the track on your surround system. If you would like to hear on your mobile phone again, select the smartphone from the list in the same way.
In the next practical tip, we will explain whether you can also use Spotify on several devices at the same time.
