Create an SSL certificate - you need to know that
With SSL encryption, you can securely transfer data over the Internet. When you create an SSL certificate, there are a few things you should be aware of. This article tells you what you need to know.
Creating an SSL certificate - the most important information
In order to offer an SSL-encrypted connection to your server, you need an SSL certificate:
- In order for an SSL certificate to be accepted by a browser without any problems, it must be signed by an official certification authority. However, these offers are almost always associated with monthly or annual costs.
- A new certification body has recently been founded under the leadership of Chrome, Facebook, Mozilla and some other companies. Under the name Let's Encrypt you can have a signed SSL certificate issued for your domain free of charge. You can also get a free certificate for non-commercial purposes from startssl.com.
- Under Linux, you can also create a server certificate with OpenSSL within a few minutes. However, this is not officially signed and therefore triggers a warning or error message in the browser. In this case, however, the connection is still encrypted.
We will show you in our next article how you can activate SSL encryption on Android or iOS.
