Create family tree in Excel - a guide
If you want to create a family tree, you do not need any additional software for this, this can also be done with Excel. We show you how:
Create family tree in Excel
- Go to the "Insert" tab above and find the "SmartArt" button under the "Illustrations" category.
- A small window now opens. Go to the "Hierarchy" category on the left and select a form for your family tree.
- Now you can decide how to build the family tree. Start with the oldest or youngest generation, either at the top or at the bottom.

Edit family tree in Excel
- Add field: Click on the arrow next to the button "Add shape" in the top left corner. Here you have several options to insert a new field. If you work from top to bottom, the option "Add shape afterwards" is usually the best option.
- Sort family tree: If you want to create some order, simply drag the fields to the desired positions. The respective connections adapt to the new position. If this does not happen, these must be adjusted manually.
- Layout: If you would like to bring all the marked fields to one page, you will find the corresponding functions in the top left under "Layout".
- Color: Switch to the "Format" tab in the top right corner to change the colors of all or individual fields.
