Disable standby in Windows 7
If you deactivate standby in Windows 7, your desktop PC or laptop remains permanently activated. This way, neither the screen will turn off nor the computer will go into sleep mode after a certain time.
How to turn off standby mode in Windows 7
You can deactivate the automatic energy saving mode in a few simple steps:
- Open the start menu. You can do this by pressing the Windows key on the keyboard.
- In the search bar "Search programs / files" enter the term "energy saving mode".
- Click on the first hit "Change energy saving mode". A new window will open.
- Here you can see one or two columns: "Battery" (for a laptop) and "Mains operation" for operation via the power cable. Below that are three lines with times: "Adjust screen brightness", "Switch off screen" and "Energy saving mode after" (see screenshot).
- To deactivate the standby mode, you must select "Never" in the last line under "Energy saving mode after" for both battery and mains operation (see screenshot).
- If you also want to keep the screen of your Windows PC permanently activated, also select "Never" for "Turn off the screen".
- Finally, click on "Save changes". Standby mode is now deactivated and your Windows 7 computer will no longer switch to energy-saving mode in the future. You can close the Control Panel window.
The standby mode also has its advantages: This protects the laptop battery by switching to energy-saving mode. A desktop PC can also cool down when Windows standby is activated. If you only want to deactivate the energy saving mode, because you have problems when you want to wake up your computer from standby, the "MCE Standby Tool" could help you.
