Steam doesn't update - what to do?
In rare cases, the Steam client may not update itself. Although this can only be a temporary problem, in some cases you have to take action yourself. You can read what to do in this practical tip.
Steam doesn't update - you can do that
The Steam client is designed in such a way that it always updates itself automatically to the latest program version. However, if the update process gets stuck, there are several things you can test:
- Wait a little. The update server may currently be overloaded, which is why the latest version cannot be downloaded successfully.
- Make sure your internet connection is working properly, because the Steam update will be downloaded from the internet.
- Run the Windows update function and download any updates that may be available.
- Some background programs can also ensure that Steam does not work properly. These include anti-virus programs, firewalls or other security tools. For a complete list, see Steam Support. The programs may need to be closed for the Steam update to work.
- Software firewalls in particular can prevent Steam from being updated. In addition to the programs you have installed, this also includes the Windows Firewall. Temporarily switch off an installed firewall or create an exception rule.
- You can also refresh your Steam installation: First, close the Steam client. Now open the installation directory and delete all files and folders except "steam.exe" and "steamapps". Now start Steam again.
