Steam: release the right ports - how it works
In order for you to download games from Steam and compete against other players online, you must release the correct ports. In this article, we will tell you what these are and how you can open ports in your firewall and router.
Steam client: Enable correct ports
The Steam client itself connects to countless networks and servers. Therefore, make sure that the following ports are enabled:
- UDP 27000 up to and including 27015 (game client traffic)
- UDP 27015 up to and including 27030 (usually for matchmaking and HLTV)
- TCP 27014 up to and including 27050 (steam downloads)
- UDP 27031 and 27036 (incoming, for in-home streaming)
- TCP 27036 and 27037 (incoming, for in-home streaming)
- UDP 4380
Steam: Other important ports
In addition to these standard ports, there are additional ports for some Steam functions that you should also enable.
- TCP 27015 (SRCDS-Rcon port for dedicated or list servers)
- UDP 3478 (Outgoing, for Steamworks P2P networking and Steam Voice Chat)
- UDP 4379 (Outgoing, for Steamworks P2P networking and Steam Voice Chat)
- UDP 4380 (Outgoing, for Steamworks P2P networking and Steam Voice Chat)
Steam ports for Call of Duty - Modern Warfare 2
If you want to play CoD Modern Warfare 2 via Steam in multiplayer, you have to release a few additional ports:
- UDP 1500 (outgoing)
- UDP 3005 (outgoing)
- UDP 3101 (outgoing)
- UDP 28960
You must open all of these ports in your router or firewall. This article is based on Steam v017.
