Steam Greenlight - what is it?
The distribution platform "Steam" is littered with indie games. The offshoot "Steam Greenlight" is also responsible for this, which we explain to you in our practical tip.
The community decides which games move into "Steam"
The starting shot for "Steam Greenlight" was in August 2012. Since then it has been easier, especially for indie developers, to bring their game to "Valves" distribution platform "Steam".
- First, the developers upload their project to "Steam Greenlight". They advertise their game with videos and screenshots. To avoid fakes and make the selection clearer for users, each developer must initially pay a fee of $ 100.
- From now on you and all other "Steam" users can vote "Yes" or "No" about the game.
- A title gets the green light as soon as "Valve" recognizes that the users are comparatively interested in it. In principle, it is not important how many votes the project receives in total. Instead, the game has to compete with the "Steam Greenlight" competition.
- As soon as the green light has been given, "Valve" contacts the developers and discusses the further process. In any case, the title can now officially appear on "Steam". Currently, 170 out of 429 accepted games have made it onto the "Steam" platform (as of January 9, 2014).
- Meanwhile "Steam Greenlight" also includes other software. However, the interest here is much lower. Only 12 of 35 confirmed programs have so far been released on "Steam" (as of January 9, 2014).
