Steam: Top up your credit - how it works
Now for the summer sale, of course, you want enough credit for the bargains. At the online games shop Steam, you can top up your credit in various ways. We show you where it works and what payment methods are available. You can find illustrated instructions in our gallery.
The different payment methods on Steam
- Steam offers many payment methods. Credit cards are of course standard. There are also PayPal, Webmoney, GiroPay, Moneybookers, Sofortüberweisung and Paysafecard. The latter are prepaid credit codes that you can purchase at vending machines or petrol stations - even without being registered with one of the online services.
- In the meantime, there are even Steam's own prepaid cards, which you can get for example in large electronics stores or at Gamestop worth 20 or 50 euros. The payment service Click and Buy has been discontinued and is therefore no longer available on Steam.
1. Top up your Steam balance online
Warning: Steam prepaid cards cannot be redeemed using this procedure. You can find out how in the following paragraph.
- First, you need to log in to the Steam website. Then go to "Account" in the top right corner and select the "Account details" option in the associated menu.
- On the right side a box appears with "your account" and the sub-item "top up your Steam balance". Clicking on it opens a page with different amounts: 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 euros.
- After selecting an amount, the palette of payment methods opens. All you have to do is select the desired payment method and carry it out and your account is loaded with the desired amount. You can then see it in the top right corner as current credit.
2. Top up your credit with Steam gift cards
Despite "Eleven different payment methods" you won't find the most obvious one where: "Top up credit": Steam credit cards. They are on a completely different side. Finding this is a matter of luck: it is hidden and cannot be selected in the account menu of the website.
- The codes can also be redeemed in the installed Steam program.
- The option is also not easy to find there: it is not hidden in the account area, but in a submenu of "Games": "Redeem Steam Credit Code".
