Steam Link and 4K - all information
With Steam Link you can also enjoy your PC games on TV. We explain in this practical tip whether this is also possible in 4K resolution.
Steam Link: Streaming Box only creates Full HD
Even if your PC is fast enough and your TV set is 4K-compatible, 4K content cannot be played on the Steam Link hardware. The streaming box is designed for a maximum resolution of 1080p at 60 frames per second.
- Steam Link would need a faster encoder to render the 4K stream. Therefore, it cannot be assumed that a 4K function will be delivered via software update in the future.
- The easiest way to bring high-definition PC games to your 4K TV is to connect your computer's graphics card to the TV using an HDMI cable. However, the cable must be suitable for the transmission of 4K content. Corresponding cables are often marked "Highspeed".
Steam Link: 4K gaming on Samsung TVs
There is another option for owners of a current Samsung TV:
- For 4K TVs made in 2016 and 2017, you can download the official Steam Link app for free from the Samsung Smart Hub and use it to stream PC games in the local network - also in 4K resolution.
- You do not need additional hardware for this. However, your PC must still have enough performance to play the game in 4K and at the same time render the stream. In addition, your network must be fast enough to transmit picture and sound smoothly.
If Steam Link is running on your TV, you can also control your PC games wirelessly. You can read about how to connect the Xbox One controller correctly in our next practical tip.
