There are a number of reasons why the Steam client won't start. We'll show you how to solve software problems without losing game data.
Delete the ClientRegistry.blob
In many cases it is sufficient to delete the "ClientRegistry.blob" file, which is located in the Steam installation directory.
- Open the Steam installation directory. By default you will find the folder under "C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Steam".
- Find and delete the ClientRegistry.blob file.
- Try to start Steam again.
Force reload of program data
If deleting the "ClientRegistry.blob" did not solve the problem, deleting further files from the Steam installation and thus forcing them to be downloaded again can help.
- Go back to the Steam installation directory.
- Delete all files and folders except "steam.exe" and the "SteamApps" folder.
- Start Steam. All necessary files are now downloaded again.
Reset the Steam client
If there are problems with the Steam settings, you can reset them with a special command.
- Press the key combination "Windows" and "R" to open the Windows Run dialog.
- Enter the command "steam: // flushconfig" (without quotation marks) and confirm with "OK".
- You will now be asked if you want to reset your local Steam settings. Confirm with OK".
- Restart your computer.
- Steam should now run normally again.
