Fend off mosquitoes: mosquitos hate this song
Who doesn't know it: As soon as it gets warmer, you can hardly take a step outside without being immediately attacked by mosquitoes. A study has now discovered the supposed solution that keeps annoying insects away: music.
This is how music helps against mosquitoes
A study was published in the tropical medicine journal "Acta Tropica", which examined whether mosquitoes can be influenced by music in their behavior. The scientists found out:
- Adult, female mosquitoes attack their victim much later when music is played.
- In addition, the investigated yellow fever mosquitoes mated less frequently and took up less blood from their host than they were provided with high-frequency music.
- Low-frequency music, on the other hand, triggers sexual interactions with the mosquitoes - they therefore mate more often.
This music particularly disturbed the insects
For their experiment, the researchers resorted to music that contains particularly high frequencies, which are constantly increasing:
- The title "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" by electro DJ Skrillex was particularly effective in preventing the insects from mating.
- The mosquitoes only attacked their host, a golden hamster, several minutes after the title had subsided. Again, they were much more careful than the mosquitos, which didn't listen to music.
- In addition, the insects mated about five times less while being sonicated by the music.
- This proves that mosquitoes can also be influenced by other noise.
