If you have ended up in tax class 6, you are in the most expensive and therefore also the most unpopular tax class. In this article we explain everything you need to know about tax class 6.
Tax class 6: who is classified there?
- You only end up in tax class 6 if you pursue two or more professional activities. This is the case if you have another job in addition to your main job that exceeds a marginal employment relationship.
- This is usually the case if you are also permanently employed in your second job, so that you can earn more than 450 euros a month.
- If you carry out several jobs as a student or draw a company pension as a pensioner and continue to work, you can also slip into tax class 6.
- Tip: Apply tax class 6 to the profession in which you earn the least income. So you can save a little in taxes.
Why is tax class 6 so expensive?
- Since you are privileged to have two jobs in income, you will be tax disadvantaged. Numerous tax breaks in tax class 6 no longer apply.
- The basic allowance is no longer applicable. In tax class 6, every euro you earn is taxed without exception.
- You cannot claim the employee lump sum, the lump sum for special expenses, the lump sum for personal retirement provision or the child allowance in tax class 6 either.
- Since you pay a comparatively large amount of tax in tax class 6, the chance of repayment is relatively good. This happens at the end of the year through the income tax equalization.
