Stiftung Warentest: Testing car sharing providers
11 car sharing providers had to prove themselves at Stiftung Warentest and have their services checked in 15 German cities. The test winner was the top dog, which also provides cars in most cities. We show which car sharing providers are worthwhile and where you can even save as a Bahncard holder.
Car sharing at goods test: Flinkster ranks first
- Flinkster starts the test from the pole position because the service is available in more than 200 cities. It is the most common. For some time now, he has also been cooperating with Car2Go, so that the car fleet is expanding significantly. Flinkster confidently rolls into first place with a grade of 1.7.
- The booking works particularly well: reservation, cancellation and availability are particularly exemplary, praises Warentest. And the condition of the vehicle and the billing are also better at Flinkster than at many competitors.
- No annual fee is required at Flinkster, but there is a one-time admission fee. The fee does not apply to Bahncard holders.
Carsharing with Multicity and Cambio: Little differences in 2nd and 3rd place
Multicity (1.9) and Cambio (2.0) took the other two places on the podium. There are no major differences between the two car sharing providers:
- Booking works just as well as with the test winner and the two providers only score a little bit worse in terms of vehicle condition and billing.
- Compared to the test winner, the website and app at Multicity and Cambio are not quite as clear and easy to use. Registration at Cambio is also a bit cumbersome, Multicity got a worse rating for the advice.
- It will be extra expensive for drivers under the age of 25: Cambio will then be obliged to pay a security package. But even with the test winner, you have to accept cutbacks - not all car types are available for selection among 25-year-olds.

Flinkster, on the other hand, sees product testing DriveNow
While the availability, vehicle condition and customer service were primarily assessed at Stiftung Warentest, we also included the travel costs and mileage restrictions in the ranking in the CHIP car sharing comparison. This shows a significantly different ranking:
- DriveNow is clearly ahead in the big CHIP test and secures first place with 97.3 percent: The provider has precise billing per minute of travel and parking and the mileage restriction is extremely generous. In contrast to all other providers, it is allowed to park in residents' homes. The personal contribution in the case of accidents is also very low.
- Car2Go follows in second place in the CHIP ranking: The mileage restriction is worse than that of the CHIP test winner, but here too there is an exact calculation according to minutes.
- The test winner from Stiftung Warentest, however, only made fourth place in the CHIP ranking and was clearly beaten at just under 73 percent. There are no minute packages and mileage restrictions here. Additional insurance must also always be taken out for the whole year - unlike other providers, this is not possible on a monthly basis.
- We have summarized the details of the CHIP car sharing test with all information about the providers in our photo gallery.
