Stiftung Warentest: eBook reader victory for Kindle Paperwhite 2
In its February update, Stiftung Warentest is testing nine new-generation ebook readers: Amazon's Kindle Paperwhite 2 and the Tolino competition are also included with new models. In this article we summarize which readers had to defeat the top dog Amazon in the product test and who has the edge in the current CHIP ranking.
Ereader test winner: Kindle Paperwhite replaced by Paperwhite 2
- "Even better" - this is the conclusion in the product test and gives the newest Kindle model "Paperwhite 2" with the top grade 1.5 the first place in the overall rating. Price: approx. 130 euros.
- Compared to the predecessor model from test 06/13, the image quality and handling have improved once again and the new Kindle has also gained in terms of "versatility".
- In the test, the Kindle Paperwhite 2 had the most even backlighting, and the ebooks could also be opened very quickly, according to the experts.
- However, one disadvantage remains: Amazon makes it difficult to read ebooks that you have bought from other retailers. With a little trick you can also read these epubs on Kindle.
- You can also use a detour to read PDF files on the Paperwhite 2.
- In a direct comparison, the Paperwhite competes against the Kindle Fire in our practical advice on buying.
2nd place: New Tolino - new pursuer
The Kindle competition was also not idle and is launching a paper white alternative with the Tolino Shine 2:
- The Tolino Shine 2, which costs around 100 euros, made the leap into "very good" image quality in the February issue and thus achieved a total of 1.7. It is still behind the two Paperwhite models, but the top is in sight.
- While the Amazon Kindles are a self-contained system, the Tolino has offered the linking of all participating bookshops since firmware 1.3: Whether Thalia, Hugendubel, Buch.de or Buecher.de - as a customer you can now use your Tolino 2 everywhere purchase. In the "Versatility" section, the reader therefore improves to a 2.0 grade.
Stiftung Warentest: taillight remains taillight
While new top products are appearing in the battle for the ebook reader tip, the last test in the February update does not score either:
- The Trekstor Pyrus (price approx. 70 euros) came last in 2013 with 3.0.
- His successor Trekstor Pyrus 2 LED (price approx. 70 euros) was even worse this year: the product testers gave the new reader a "sufficient" rating 3.6.
- The main reason for this are defects in the design and various software errors. It was the only device that did not have a touch-sensitive screen.

CHIP Leaderboard: Tolino 2 is not a Kindle competitor
A look at the CHIP leaderboard reveals that the new Tolino 2 is far from being able to compete with the Amazon flagship. However, there are other competitors ...
- The CHIP experts also rank the undisputed leader of the Papwerhite 2 reader. In the test lab, the new Kindle proved that it not only has a top screen, but also a respectable speed.
- In second place is Sony's PRS T3 reader, which does not have a backlight, but convinces with a sharp display and fast response time. (Price about 90 euros).
- The predecessor Kindle "Paperwhite" secures third place, while competitor Tolino only makes seventh place.
