Stiftung Warentest: Photo books in the 2015 test
Stiftung Warentest has examined photo books from many large providers: But where are your vacation photos really printed in good quality and how easily can customers design their photo books? We summarize the results and explain which provider compiles your photos into the most beautiful book. And who knows, maybe a great Christmas present is hidden here.
Product test winner: The best photo books from Saturn and Pixum
The test winner at Stiftung Warentest are the photo books from Saturn and Pixum with a grade of 2.1. But here's a look at the details:
- In terms of the quality and scope of the standard and premium photo books, Pixum is slightly better than Saturn. The reason for the same final grade: Saturn is more sensitive to user data, says Stiftung Warentest. Pixum is only average here.
- The design and ordering process of the photo books worked perfectly for both test winners. No wonder, because both cooperate with the photo book specialist CEWE in printing. That's why the best photo books come from Saturn and Pixum, the test result shows.
- The price for the photo books is quite high: around 27 euros for the standard version, 32 euros for the premium book. Saturn and Pixum take over the prices of the manufacturer Cewe, only the shipping costs differ slightly.

Photo books: 40 percent savings with Aldi and Lidl
Aldi and Lidl also offer photo books: Compared to Saturn and Pixum, you save a whopping 40 percent here.
- However, the quality is not as excellent as that of the test winners. There was only one "satisfactory" in this category for the standard and premium photo books of both discounters. In the end, Aldi and Lidl received a grade of 2.6.
- In terms of design, however, the discounters are at the forefront and offer a huge range of functions with the respective photo software. According to the product test, they also handle user data appropriately.
Rossmann photo book in last place
- The Rossmann photo book was rated the worst with a grade of 3.3: The quality of the photo books was only satisfactory, the website offered little information and the use was not so easy, according to the testers.
- Warentest sees another problem with the general terms and conditions. According to the experts, they contain clear shortcomings. This puts Rossman at the bottom of the product test ranking.

CHIP test confirms: Pixum is number 1
- The CHIP photo book test shows that provider Pixum prints the best photo books - in standard and premium quality. CEWE is located directly behind it. But be careful: Even Pixum has a large part of its own photo books produced by CEWE.
- Our quality check showed: All motifs are perfectly sharp. Despite a slight red cast, Pixum sets the best value in terms of colors and skin tones. An alternative is only photo specialist CEWE itself.
- Tip for premium books: Saal Digital is almost as good but around five euros cheaper (2nd place in the CHIP test).
- If you want to save something when ordering your photo book, you will often find a discount for CEWE, Pixum and Co. in the CHIP voucher portal.
