Stiftung Warentest: Inexpensive cat food is the test winner
Cat food did not go down well at Stiftung Warentest: six cans of chicken or tuna failed the test - almost always because of the poor composition of fat, protein, vitamins and minerals. Cheap cat food from the supermarket shows that it can be done better. We summarize the results and tell you which cat food is really good.
Stiftung Warentest: Edeka cat food is the test winner
If you want to do something good for your cat, buy the cheapest cat food. What at first sounds like a contradiction is, according to the Stiftung Warentest, clearly the best choice. Because the test winner is Edeka's own brand (grade 1.2).
- The test winner "Good & Cheap: Tender pieces with chicken in fine sauce" convinced in all categories. The feed provides the cat with a balanced supply of all the necessary nutrients, according to Warentest. With 23 cents per day ration, it is also particularly inexpensive.
- Almost as good is Norma's cat food "Kitty Cat: Juicy pieces in sauce with poultry and liver". This also costs 23 cents / daily ration. There are only small differences in the declaration, otherwise everything is great here too. Grade 1.3.
- The "Topic: Tender Meal with Hearty Beef & Chicken" cat food from Aldi Nord also received a grade of 1.3. There are only minimal deviations in the pollutants and the declaration, which is why the cat food receives a grade of 1.3.
- All details can be found at test.de.
Stiftung Warentest: This cat food failed the test
If a cat food has too much or too little fat, protein, vitamins or minerals, Stiftung Warentest will give it a worse rating. If there were three cat foods, the ideal values deviated so much that Stiftung Warentest let the cat food fail. And that at a price of sometimes 3.50 euros per can ...
- "The cat food from organic farmers" with the "Chicken Sensitive" flavor from Defu is too rich in fat and contains hardly any vitamin E, vitamin B, zinc and iodine. The recommended amount tends to be too high. Grade 5.0.
- "Gourmet Gold: Fine pate mousse with tuna" is anything but fine: It has a high phosphorus content, which can be problematic for cats with kidney disease. The sodium content is even above the safe limit set by the feed industry.
- The gourmet product "Terra faelis natural food for cats: chicken with pumpkin and catnip" is a very fatty cat food with too little protein, zinc and vitamin B. The recommended amount is too high and instead of the promised "90 percent meat" it only contains cheap offal.
- Three other products failed due to incorrect or missing feeding recommendations: Mac's Salmon & Chicken ", " The feed house Activa Gold Chicken + Salmon with Pumpkin + Amaranth "and" Tundra Complete Cat Food Chicken Pure "each received the rating" Poor ".
Stiftung Warentest recommends changing cat food
- So that your cat stays healthy for a long time and can play a lot, you should choose one of the three "very good" cat foods. Changing the food is usually not that easy, because cats are very picky. Once you get used to a food, you won't eat any other quickly.
- That is why Stiftung Warentest advises: Mix only a little bit of the new feed with the old feed. Over the next few days, increase the amount until your cat only gets the new food and eats. It can often help to warm the food.
- Whether the feed change is successful also depends on what the cat ate in its first six months. You will be very successful if the feed was varied. Because then the cat quickly accepts new food.
