Stiftung Warentest winner navigation devices: TomTom beats Garmin among the 5-inch models
It's a tight race, but in the end the TomTom Go 50 won the day. Competitor Garmin Nuvi 2599 LMT took second place:
- TomTom Go 50: The TomTom navigation system showed the best navigation with flawless announcement in the test. The device, which costs around 150 euros, was also convincing in terms of speech recognition. Only the handling works better with others. Grade: 2.2.
- Garmin Nüvi 2599 LMT: top handling - but the TomTom is simply better when it comes to navigation, according to the foundation. The integrated hands-free system is particularly convenient. The navigation device, which costs around 180 euros, received a grade of 2.3 in second place.
Stiftung Warentest: Navi winner with 6 inches
Beckers Professional 6 LMU received the best mark (2.1) among the 6-inch models in the test. In this category, second place went to Garmin with the Nüvi 2699 LMT (grade: 2.2):
- Becker Professional 6: Particularly easy to use and extremely versatile, according to the experts. With integrated hands-free function and self-explanatory menu, the navigation system is at the top of the test. The navigation of the approx. 200 euro device is not quite as good as that of the Garmin navigator.
- Garmin Nuvi 2699 LMT: Although the hands-free function at Garmin is particularly good, handling is not that easy. Especially with daily use, the device is more cumbersome than the test winner. Price: approx. 200 euros.

Test winner compared to the CHIP leaderboard and the pre-test
New navigation devices are worse than the satnavs from last year:
- In the pre-test (2014), the TomTom Start 25M performed better than the current test winner: the device received a grade of 1.9 - while this year's test winner only managed a grade of 2.2.
- The Becker Ready 70 LMU also performed better among the 6- to 7-inch models: it got a grade of 2.0.
- TomTom also leads the CHIP leaderboard: The TomTom Go Live 1015 takes first place, closely followed by the TomTom Go Live 1005.

The best navigation apps in the 2015 test: As good as a navigation device
The best navigation apps are free for Android smartphones, but you have to pay for the iPhone. But you can also take it with the navigation devices mentioned above. These are the best apps from the 2015 test:
- Android: The best navigation offers the free HERE app from Nokia and even finds its way offline. Although there is no lane assistant for drivers, those who do not have a car can find bus and train connections using the app.
- Android: The free navigation from Google Maps was also convincing, but the battery drained quickly. So keep these tips in mind. You can find bus and train connections on Google Maps, as well as a lane assistant. Only offline is not possible.
- iOS: TomTom Europe scares many away with its price of 60 euros. But behind the app is an ingenious navigation system that can easily keep up with the devices listed above and is better than any Android app. Offline navigation works great and the battery consumption is very low - 1st place in the goods test.
- iOS: Navigon Europe is also subject to a fee (approx. 80 euros) and plays in a league with TomTom. In the Stiftung Warentest test, however, it caused the shortest battery life, otherwise the testers were enthusiastic.
- Tip: Google Maps convinced by a clear margin among the free apps for iOS. However, nothing goes offline and the battery for navigation is enormous.
