Stiftung Warentest: Notebooks 2016 tested
Stiftung Warentest tested the latest notebooks, ultrabooks and convertibles in the 04/2016 notebook test. In addition to the performance of the device, the display and battery were also put to the test. When buying, it means: look closely. Because every second notebook is only "satisfactory" or worse. We summarize the test results and show which notebooks are worthwhile.
Product test winner of the notebooks: Top device from Toshiba
The Toshiba Satellite L50 C 275 leads the product test ranking of notebooks with a grade of 2.3:
- The notebook is relatively thin and has a bright Full HD display. However, the screen is reflective, so that hardly anything can be seen in direct sunlight.
- In the test, the Toshiba notebook showed the best battery life and is especially great for office applications. But videos and 3D games also run flawlessly. The price is around 750 euros. If that is too expensive for you, you can also choose a cheaper alternative notebook for less than 400 euros.
- Tip: These are the best notebooks in the CHIP test (up to 500 euros).
Product test winner of the Ultrabooks: Asus brings the performance winner
The best ultrabook from the test is the Asus Zenbook UX303UB with a grade of 2.1. The details:
- The Zenbook from Asus has the highest computing power and is also the most versatile, praises Warentest. The matte Full HD display does a good job, and games and office applications run pretty well on the Asus Ultrabook.
- Despite the light SSD and little equipment, the Zenbook weighs around 1.5 kilograms. It is a bit heavier than most other ultrabooks. Price: approx.1, 200 euros.

Notebook, ultrabook or convertible - so you make the right decision
While in the past you mainly looked at performance, today the laptop type is an important criterion. Only then will the details come into focus.
- Notebook: This type of device is usually the cheapest and is intended for the desk. He brings everything that is important for games, office and films. However, it is often a bit heavier and the battery is not as powerful or the power consumption is higher compared to other devices. In the CHIP leaderboard you will find an overview of the top devices with all their performance features.
- Ultrabook: Ultrabooks are ideal for mobile use because they are lighter and usually smaller than notebooks. The computing power is just as good as the tests show. Larger components such as a DVD drive or an extra graphics card are usually missing.
- Convertible: If you can't choose between an ultrabook and a tablet, you can go for a convertible and get both. This makes watching films and surfing the net on the go much more convenient.
- CHIP purchase advice: We show you exactly what criteria you need to look out for in the new notebook, ultrabook or convertible.
