Stiftung Warentest: Samsung at the top of the smartphone
Stiftung Warentest is examining 20 new smartphones in the June update. These include the new HTC One M8 and the Galaxy S5. We show who made it to the top in smartphone testing and which models failed in the test.
Stiftung Warentest: Samsung continues to expand smartphone top
Since 2013, only Samsung smartphones have managed to win one point, no other manufacturer. In the June 2014 update, the winner is also called Samsung. With the Galaxy S5, Samsung is expanding its overall lead from the January test. The details:
- The Samsung Galaxy S5 makes it to the top of the June update with a grade of 1.8. The main reason for this is the long battery life and the convenient surfing and sending of emails.
- The special features of the Galaxy S5 include the fingerprint scanner and the heart rate monitor. The experts, however, complained about minor deficiencies in terms of voice quality and video recording. Price about 450 euros.
- The Galaxy S4 performed only slightly better in the pre-test (grade 1.7). In a direct comparison, in addition to the video and voice quality, it is also somewhat better in terms of synchronization, navigation and handling.
More new top smartphones in the test
In addition to the Galaxy S5, Stiftung Warentest tested other top models:
- HTC One M8: The new HTC flagship received only an overall rating of 2.0 ("good") from the product test experts. The main reason for this was the camera, which only took "satisfactory" pictures in the test. However, the 3D function for videos and the fast LTE radio were particularly striking. Price about 490 euros.
- Nokia Lumia 1520: With a grade of 2.1, the Windowsphone Lumia 1520 takes third place in the product test update. It is very suitable for playing music, recording videos, surfing and checking emails works without any problems, according to the experts. Price about 430 euros.

The top management looks different in the CHIP leaderboard (as of August 31, 2014):
- The new HTC One M8 tops the CHIP leaderboard and raises the bar again. Thanks to its outstanding performance, a top-notch display and long battery life, the HTC One M8 is in first place.
- The new Samsung Galaxy S5 comes in second place. According to our test, the Galaxy S5 cannot keep up with the HTC model in the "Phone and battery" and "Handling" categories.
